Frontiers of the Roman Empire

Bernard Joseph Esposo Guerrero The Philippines - 04-May-24

Frontiers of the Roman Empire

In driving around southern Germany, I managed to see two components of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, dubbed as the longest monument in Europe at 550 kilometers long. The first one is Castra Vetoniana in Pfünz (Bavaria) and the other is the Double Fort in Osterburken (Baden-Wurttemburg). The weather forecast was not promising when we headed out for Ingolstadt. On the way, as predicted, it started to rain and we could only hope for that it would stop as we got nearer. Lying on top of a hill, Castra Vetoniana provides a commanding view over the village of Pfünz. Thanks to the rain, the parking lot was empty and so we had the whole site to ourselves

Armenian Monastic Ensembles

Armenian Monastic Ensembles

There seems to be a shared frustration about Dzordzor in the group. I also did not get to see it during my visit. As previous reviewers have already tackled a great deal about St. Stephanos and St. Thaddeus monasteries, I'd like to focus on Chupan Chapel, which is conveniently located on the way to St. Stephanos from Jolfa, and Darrasham Chapel (AKA Church of the Holy Mother of God), both components of the St. Stephanos monastic ensemble. After visiting the monastery, the driver of the rented car took it upon himself to drive us further to check Darrasham Chapel, of which Solivagant was right when he said that it lies in the "no photography zone". Apparently locals can go near the structure and some, as suggested by a few rubbish, even use the area for picnics

Olympic Park Munich (T)

Olympic Park Munich (T)

Rather easy to get to from the city center via the U-Bahn, Olympiapark is directly right across the highway from the BMW Welt, and it can be visited together with the nearby Nymphenburg. It is free to walk around the grounds, but one needs to pay entrance to see the Stadium and the TV Tower, where one can catch a nice view of Munich backdropped by the Alps. The arguments forwarded are satisfactory, with proposed crits. (i) and (ii) being the strongest in my opinion. Indeed the architecture of the tent was innovative, and its pioneering planned integration with the landscape remains to be unique considering that a large part of the area used to be an airport

Mapungubwe

Bernard Joseph Esposo Guerrero The Philippines - 28-Dec-23

Mapungubwe

Mpungubwe is located far away along the border of South Africa with Botswana and Zimbabwe, and at one of the viewpoints you can see the convergence of the three countries. Prior to the visit, we made it a point to visit the Dzata ruins in the Southspanberg (a World Biosphere Reserve) to serve as a reference and comparison site. Its connections with Mpungubwe and Great Zimbab are quite strong and evident, and it enriches the understanding of the culture from that corner of the globe. In terms of chronology, Mpungubwe preceded Great Zimbab and Dzata came in later using stones from Zimbabwe.

Persian Caravanserai

Bernard Joseph Esposo Guerrero The Philippines - 19-Dec-23

Persian Caravanserai

My initial reaction when I finally saw the inscribed properties under Persian Caravanserai was of wonder as to why the beautiful Aminoddoleh Timche in the grand bazaar of Kashan was not included. Its divine blue dome, an architectural marvel in its own right, could have easily been the poster photo of this batch. I managed to see three from this serial property: Bisotun, Kharanaq, and Meybod.

The inscribed area of Bisotun has two caravanserais, one is older than the other
